Grades 1-2 Tal Am Curriculum Overview
Tal Am is based on the principle of communicative heritage language acquisition. The program activates learning in all frames of mind by utilizing a wide range of activities for all modes of communication, integrating Hebrew Language acquisition, the development of Jewish concepts and values, and reading and writing skills. In accordance with these principles, the programs create a visual and auditory Hebrew environment in the classroom which is mirrored in the students' materials, thus extending their use into the home, enhancing retention and reinforcing the learning process. The curriculum offers a variety of stories, Jewish sources, as well as songs, recitations and plays which are age-appropriate and which aim to develop the child and his or her Jewish identity. It should be stressed that the curriculum does not utilize translation, and uses pictures and other devices to teach Hebrew in Hebrew.

3. To bring learners in contact with Jewish texts, both primary sources and texts that have been reworked for beginning Hebrew students.
4. To expose learners to the life experiences of Hebrew speaking children in Israel.
5. To awaken in learners an awareness of the special characteristics of the Hebrew language and the connection between modern Hebrew and the Hebrew from our Jewish sources. |
