Our Hebrew Language Program, Chalav U’Dvash, was designed for non-native Israeli children who are engaging with Hebrew for the first time.  We seek to impart a basic knowledge of spoken Hebrew that will provide a foundation for future study of the language.  We develop our children’s ability to communicate in Hebrew by providing them with a variety of opportunities to use linguistic patterns and vocabulary acquired.  They are given the ability to connect Hebrew to everyday social situations related to children’s experiences in the home, at school, in encounters with friends and holiday celebrations.  Chalav U’Dvash makes Hebrew a source of pleasure for the children and involve the entire family in the learning experience.

The principles that guide the Chalav U’Dvash program are:

1. The child in the center – The entire program and all of the activities have been designed with the child in mind and is guided by research on language acquisition at this age.  Our aim is to imbue in the children a love for Hebrew as well as to instill a sound basis of the language by teaching it in an authentic communicative manner.

2. Graded, systematic language instruction - Chalav u'Dvash focuses on the linguistic patterns that are the foundation of the language.  Through the patterns, the children learn the rules of the Hebrew language.  Progressive learning is facilitated by the inclusion of vocabulary familiar to the children - for example chocolate and shokolad.  This creates a sense of basic knowledge and confidence in Hebrew and enables the child to speak Hebrew from the very first sessions.

3. Spiral instruction - Children learn to use language through repeated encounters with the same pattern in different contexts. Each study unit builds on those preceding it and includes the previously learned vocabulary and patterns.

4. Israel education - the Hebrew language can serve as a living bridge connecting the children to Israel. The program includes a variety of activities and teaching aids which, in addition to their role in Hebrew language instruction, serve as a window on the landscapes and children of Israel for the young child in the Diaspora.
