Preschool Updates

Green-thumbed Cub classes gathered together for a little yard work this week! Gardening is an important skill for toddlers and can enhance fine motor skills, embolden the understanding of cause-and-effect relationships, and can begin to develop the patience to watch things grow. In addition, our young learners exercised locomotor skills, body management skills, and object control while they moved from station to station, carrying small plastic tools, soil, and water.

Lower School Updates

First graders braved the melting winter snows at Mount Charleston this week. They enjoyed time outdoors exploring the landscape, engaging in activities led by our dynamic Lower School specialists and classroom teachers. Taking time outside the classroom builds social relationships and friendships, opens the imagination, and reminds students of all of the learning that can take place outside of the walls of our beautiful campus.

Young musicians have been hard at work on their songwriting and recording projects. They are currently putting the finishing touches on the recordings, and they plan to have our album Class of 2023 posted to streaming services and YouTube under the artist name Adelson Radio by the final week of school. Many thanks to Mr. Sam for his expertise in assisting our budding Irving Berlins and Jule Stynes. Stay tuned!

Preschool Updates

Our youngest Cubs enjoyed celebrating Israel Independence Day by visiting the different classrooms throughout the preschool campus. Each room was decorated with the theme of a specific city in Israel. Students began their voyage at the airport and caught a flight to the land of milk and honey. After a stop at the suk, they enjoyed time in the Dead Sea. Later, they found  time to write letters for the wall in Jerusalem. They ended their adventure with a meal in downtown Haifa. The Cubs enjoyed learning about different aspects of Israeli culture and history during their journey.

Preschool students are enjoying spring library visits during which they are exploring the LEGO table, the puzzle corner, the cozy circle chairs, as well as engaging in storytime on the rug. Our Cubs are gearing up for the coming years when they will visit the space weekly and become official Adelson Library patrons.

Lower School Updates

On Tuesday, in honor of Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day), fifth graders gathered with the Upper School community to memorialize those who have fallen in their struggle to defend the State of Israel. We mourned and remembered brave soldiers and victims of terror. Israelis owe their independence to the soldiers whose sacrifices made it possible. We were grateful for the opportunity to come together as a community to offer our thanks and respect to those who made sacrifices for the well-being and freedom of the people of Israel and beyond.

Israeli Independence Day, Yom Ha’atzmaut, is celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Iyar and recognizes the formal establishment of the State of Israel. 75 years ago, members of the provisional government signed a Declaration of Independence and declared a national holiday in Israel. The official “switch” from Yom HaZikaron to Yom Ha’atzmaut takes place a few minutes after sundown with an official ceremony held at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. At the Adelson School, students in the Lower School celebrated with an exuberant ceremony on the soccer field led by our dear Shinshinim as well as outdoor games and events, including tile painting, “fishing,” and dancing along to Israeli tunes. Upper School students facilitated activities for their younger counterparts, joining the divisions together in respect for and celebration of the establishment of the State of Israel.   VIEW PHOTOS

Preschool Updates

Music has the ability to evoke many feelings and emotions in each of us. Different melodies can make us feel sad and reminiscent, they may inspire us to move or dance, or help us to feel relaxed and calm. This week, the younger preschool students engaged with Ms. Maria in a musical lesson that both identified and labeled specific feelings, as well as encouraged students to pause and take stock of how the music inspired them physically.

Preschool students also had the opportunity to create a hot air balloon in order to solidify their learning about different and unique forms of transportation. They enjoyed working together decorating their balloons, sharing thoughts about the balloon’s shape, and discussing the kinds of transportation that involve flight in comparison to those that transport passengers via roads and rails.

Lower School Updates

National Poetry Month

During Library this week, in celebration of National Poetry Month, students participated in mini poetry slams, created acrostic poems, and enjoyed reading aloud work from various authors including Kwame Alexander and Shel Silverstein. Through writing and reading poems, students experienced different poetic structures including free verse and rhyming stanzas, they explored themes of identity and nature in their writing, and they experimented with illustrating their own text.

Yom HaShoah

Our fifth graders joined the Upper School in a reflective ceremony in the theater this week during Holocaust Remembrance Day. Our matriculating students were able to pause to remember lives lost during this dark period in history. While we at Adelson can gingerly guide our fifth graders in their knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust as they grow and mature into middle and high school students, we will never be able to show them what it might have been like for students like Anne Frank, whose life was changed forever right around what would have been equivalent to her fifth grade year in school.

This Week in Lower School

Over the past few weeks, all students in the Pre and Lower Schools have been learning about the upcoming holiday of Passover. All classes enjoyed Passover model seders this year.

Through the creative and interdisciplinary work of our faculty, we experienced the ways in which our Passover curriculum is scaffolded from grade to grade. Our youngest learners focused on the fourteen orders of the seder and were introduced to many songs from the Haggadah, as they have started to become more proficient Hebrew readers. They began to understand the symbolism of each item on the seder plate and created their individual seder plates in art class. Students also sang the “Ma Nishtana” (the Four Questions) as well as experienced the full Passover story by acting out the characters in lively, guided lessons in their classes.

In the older grades, students focused on B’chol Dorr Vador, a phrase from the Haggadah, which refers to the idea that each generation should see themselves as if they left Egypt. In order to enrich the students’ understanding, they created mirrors. The students learned to identify and give their opinions as to how each traditional step that we take during our Passover seders is related to Freedom or Slavery. During their seders, the students and parents were able to discuss and share their opinions.

We were proud to witness many students taking on leadership roles in their classroom model seders by guiding their classmates through the different parts of the Haggadah.

In addition, students participated in a student-led seder as an interactive experience. The students each researched one part of the Haggadah and found multiple commentaries on why and how each part is performed. They then created a presentation and shared it during their seder.

All classes shared in reciting the blessings, dancing and singing the Passover songs, as well as drinking grape juice, enjoying the seder plate food, and eating the Matzah.

Preschool

Our Cubs practiced belly breathing by watching as a stuffed animal moved up and down on their stomachs. Managing emotions and developing patience are skills that our youngest learners continue to hone as the school year progresses. Many preschool classes also enjoyed Passover Seders this week, during which they enjoyed songs and special foods with family members joining in the celebration of spring and the holiday season.

Symbols Fair

Our second graders shined as they presented work at the annual Symbols Fair. Dressed in colorful garb representing our country’s flag, students shared with faculty, administrators and families their drawings, research, and 3-D printed materials focusing on foundational symbols in United States history, including the Statue of Liberty and the American flag. We are endlessly grateful to our creative second grade team, specialist faculty members, and administrators for their commitment to cultivating for the students a rich understanding, respect, and appreciation for these key elements in American history. VIEW PHOTOS

Mr. Evan Gutierrez

With heavy hearts, we send best wishes to Mr. Evan Gutierrez, a member of our Adelson School staff for the last 15 years, as he transitions into a new chapter with the Sands Corporation Security Team. Students expressed farewells and warm wishes with a parade and beautiful signage. We are thrilled to report that Mr. Gutierrez will return to coach Adelson sports next school year, so his sincere smile, warm presence, and professional manner will continue to remind our community that everyday kindnesses make a huge difference. PLAY VIDEO | VIEW PHOTOS

Battle of the Books

We are infinitely excited to share that our school has won the annual, city-wide Battle of the Books competition, held at the Meadows school this week. Out of 41 schools across the valley, the Adelson School received top honors and first place trophies. Special thanks to parents of our winning team – otherwise known as the Ravenclaw Lions – Juliana Levisman (captain), Ethan Lawrence, Mila Richards, and Jasmine Meyers for their support and encouragement as we worked with the team to prepare. We also want to acknowledge the larger group of 20 ambitious fourth and fifth graders who have participated in BoB alongside the Ravenclaw Lions since the beginning of the school year. School competitions usually take place on a court or field, and involve a ball. BoB honors those students who may be drawn to a different kind of challenge; one that involves themes, plots, and characters. We are grateful for our administrators who seek and support myriad opportunities that cater to all of the different kinds of children on our campus, making way for every student to shine. Thank you to Ms. Nails and Mrs. Tecktiel for facilitating BoB over the course of the school year, and to faculty and administrators for giving them the time and space to do so. Go, Lions!

This Week in Lower School

Preschool

Our Cubs have begun preparing for their Passover Seders. Learning songs, creating art, and listening to stories about the holiday have been themes over the course of the week. The students continue to solidify classroom routines and structures, and they are growing each day in their abilities to share, exercise patience, use their verbal skills in order to communicate their needs, and in their awareness of others.

Lower School

Kindergartners enjoyed the warm weather on their field trip to Floyd Lamb State Park this week. As a final step in an ongoing experiment with Ms. Page, students released the trout that they had raised in their science lab. A group of Upper School students, the Pet Vets, joined the field trip to support this project and join for the release. There was much to be gained in bringing the divisions together in this way; working alongside the older students gave our kindergartners a sense of pride in their work, and our high schoolers were able to shine as leaders as they guided the younger ones through the experiment successfully.

In the spirit of Tikkun Olam, fifth grade students visited various Lower School classrooms in order to engage in creating craft projects with the younger students including spring placemats, matzah covers, and toys. Upon completion of the projects, our middle-schoolers-to-be will host a Shuk after school on Monday, March 27. Families will be invited to purchase the homemade goods, and all proceeds will go to a local animal rights organization. We are proud of our fifth grade students for taking initiative to make a difference in the community as well as in leading their fellow students in creating these creative projects. We are endlessly grateful to our fifth grade team for their energy and enthusiasm in facilitating opportunities for the students that challenge them to think of others, to reach out into the community, and that embolden them to think of how they can and will make a difference.

Battle of the Books

We are thrilled to announce that the winner of the final Adelson School Battle of the Books battle is the Ravenclaw Lions! The team includes fifth graders Ethan Lawrence, Juliana Levisman, and Mila Richards, and fourth grader Jasmine Meyers. These students will go on to represent our school in the regional battles to take place at the Meadows School on Thursday, March 23. They will compete against the winning teams from participating schools across the city in heated battles that test their knowledge of varying details from eight novels. Go, Lions!

Preschool

Our Cubs celebrated Purim through many dynamic and creative activities. Students participated in a family parade, strutting across campus in costume while melting the hearts of all in their route! Cubs also watched the Purim play, escaped into the rapture of the bouncy houses, and enjoyed hamantaschen. We are so grateful to our families for their participation in and support of this festive holiday.

Lower School

All grade levels entered a beautifully decorated campus on Tuesday to celebrate Purim in costume, and throughout the day, they enjoyed special programming, sweets, and outdoor time. Batmen, Spidermen, and princesses of all sorts were spotted sprinting with abandon across the soccer field from one giant bouncy castle to the next, darting into the art tent now and again to enjoy crafts with special guest, Bob Ross.

The weeks of planning and preparation facilitated in each grade level by our talented Hebrew and Judaics faculty weeks ago came to fruition as students engaged in songs, storytelling, and creative projects, with the story of Esther, Mordechai, and King Haman as the theme. In particular, our fifth graders shined as they served as Grand Marshalls in our Preschool and Lower School parades. In addition, and in preparation for middle school, the fifth grade classes joined the Upper School for their parade, carnival, lunch, and Megillah reading. Overheard later in the fifth grade corridor:  "This is the best Purim ever!"

Thanks to the endless energy and enthusiasm of our Shinshinim, Morah Dina, and all of our faculty, administrators, and families, our annual Purim celebration was an outstanding success.

Battle of the Books

This week, participating fourth and fifth grade students engaged in the preliminary Battle of the Books school battles. Since the fall, interested students have been meeting weekly in the library to prepare. They were tasked with reading eight novels over the course of the school year (in addition to all other schoolwork, extra-curriculars, etc.), take notes on the novels, commit story elements and details to memory, all in preparation for Jeopardy-style battles. In our first round of battles this week, we have narrowed down our four teams to two. Congratulations to those two remaining teams:  the Ravenclaw Lions and Music for Green Beans. Next week, these two teams compete against one another in our final Battle of the Books school battle. The winning team will go on to represent Adelson School in the regional battles to take place at the Meadows School in late March.

Preschool Updates

This week, in celebration of Nevada Reading Week, preschool students had the opportunity to visit the library and share books with Ms. Nails as well as various Lower School students. Following a long journey from their classrooms across campus, and after quick hugs for Ms. Maria (whose office is located across from the library), students entered the library space. They enjoyed relaxing in beanbags, engaging in read-alouds, and exploring books of their choosing. It was a thrill to welcome our most miniature students into the Adelson Library.

In addition to many families visiting the preschool throughout the week for reading time in classroom nooks, families were also invited to visit different preschool classrooms after school on Tuesday in order to hear favorite titles read by various faculty members. For each classroom, teachers and administrators had chosen books to fit certain themes (e.g. Zoo Animals or Farm Animals). Families could jaunt from room to room to hear the different themed books. Visitors were given a warm welcome and students loved listening to the stories as well as exploring classrooms outside of their own.

Lower School Updates

Purim Prep

In order to prepare for Purim, all students learned about the Purim mitzvah of Matanot l'evyonim and the importance of giving gifts to others in need.

In addition, students joined together to assist in packing all of the cans collected for the 100th day of school. The bags will be distributed to area families on Purim through the organization Aishel Abraham. We thank PA members Melanie Lewis and Rachel Allen for their tremendous help during the packing.

Third grade students also performed a Purim play, which illustrated the events in shushan. The actors showcased personality and spirit as they presented the story in both Hebrew and English and danced and drummed to Purim songs.

During Shabbat, fifth grade students shared information about their Tikkun Olam project and inspired all Lower School students to think of others and to remember that service to the community is part of RUACH. We are proud of these young leaders and are thrilled to witness their growth as they near matriculation into sixth grade next year.

Nevada Reading Week

We were delighted to celebrate reading in all areas of campus this week. In the LS gym, our community joined on Monday evening for a Family Read-in. Students and families lovingly lugged pillows, sleeping bags, blankets, and of course their favorite books, through the rain and into the warmth of the gym where friends and peers waited with more books, hot cocoa, bean bags and board games. Families visited, read, played games, and enjoyed time together around stories, literacy, and the power of the written word. This roving Adelson News Reporter must note that not a SmartPhone was in sight (not that technology is bad, just saying!).

In the Beit Midrash on Monday during school, fifth grade students had the opportunity to read with special guest J.J. Snyder from Channel 13 News! On Wednesday in the space, junior kindergarten, kindergarten, and first graders were delighted by a presentation from local author and singer-songwriter Sierra Gullickson, who’s Read Laugh Sing book series has been wowing audiences in person and via YouTube for years. Students were excellent listeners during the read aloud and participated with exuberance during the dancing!

Over the course of the week, students in all grade levels joined in the Adelson Library to enjoy snacks, play games, write and share riddles, and to choose different books to read to one another. High school Hebrew students read in Hebrew to first graders, middle school Social Studies students listened as fourth grade partners read aloud their favorite books. Second grade students had the opportunity to act as leaders when they paired up in the library with preschool students and read aloud to the Cubs. All students were grateful for the time spent with their buddies in the library this week.

Our week culminated in the theater on Friday after Shabbat, with a beautiful presentation from esteemed author Daria Peoples, whose illustrations and text celebrate inclusivity, highlight the power of standing up and sharing your voice, and fit this year’s Reading Week theme, “One World, Many Stories,” beautifully. Ms. Peoples led junior kindergarten through fifth grade students in special art projects as well as shared background about her books and her experiences as an author and artist.

Finally, our StuCo is making our Lower School Buddy Reading event from last month a tradition! Students in different grade levels paired together in various classrooms to enjoy favorite books together, to get to know one another better, and to celebrate the joy and connection found in stories.

Reading Week was a success thanks to the many parent volunteers who took on the task of decorating a banner for a preschool or lower school door, to the administration for opening up our very busy schedule for guest authors and parent readers, and to faculty across all divisions for their flexibility in taking time out from regular curricular class time to celebrate reading. We thank our entire community for pausing routines and getting lost in stories together. Let’s all try to remember to get lost like that a little more often.

Now, on to Purim! Shabbat Shalom, families. Have a restful weekend.

Preschool Updates

This week, Ms. Maria read The New Baby by Mercer Mayer which focuses on new siblings and babies joining families to the Green Caterpillar and Grasshopper classes. The children learned from Little Critter, the main character, what types of activities babies like to play, and Ms. Maria and the children practiced how to gently hold, rock, and swaddle a baby. It is an important aspect of a young child’s development to learn and have the opportunity to practice interacting with others with care, gentleness, and compassion.

Lower School Updates

Lower School students were greeted with music and well wishes for the new month of Adar by our Student Council. As we enter the month of Adar, the happiest month on the Jewish calendar, we are gearing up for Purim festivities. Our classes have begun learning about the upcoming holiday, each grade level with their own twist:

Kindergarten brought the spirit of Adar to our Shabbat by singing a few Purim songs on stage. Next week, third graders will perform a Purim play. Fourth graders are discussing issues found within the Purim Megillah story as well as brainstorming solutions. Fifth grade students are researching the Purim characters and their behavior and will use the information to shoot a news broadcast as the characters in the Megillah story.

In addition, first grade students learned all the Hebrew letters and can now read in Hebrew. They designed Hebrew letter cookies and decorated their treats with their parents. They also read to their families in Hebrew and made Hebrew letter bracelets.

On Tuesday, our fifth graders led fourth grade CSI detectives through a mock “crime scene” in order to solve a mystery on the porch of a beach house using forensic science. Our fourth graders investigated the crime scene looking at evidence and taking notes as they tried to gather as much information as possible. They wore gloves and received a CSI crime scene badge and case file. On Wednesday, fifth graders led the fourth graders through forensic labs in order to test the evidence gathered at the crime scene. Student scientists loved studying fingerprints, testing threads, considering DNA results, smelling cologne samples, using chromatology and dipping PH strips in liquids to narrow down the list of suspects. We are grateful to Ms. Garner for leading this informative and fascinating experiential event each year.

We are thrilled to celebrate Nevada Reading Week next week, February 27-March 3. Remember that Monday, February 27 is pajama day for Lower School students. Join us that afternoon at 4:30pm in the Lower School gym for a Family Read-in event. Bring your favorite books and blankets, wear your pjs, and enjoy time together as a community around our favorite reading materials.

Shabbat Shalom to all, and best wishes for a restful weekend.

Preschool Updates

Our Cubs continue to grow and mature into their classroom routines, social interactions, and their demeanor during adventures to different locations in the school. They now exhibit more focused behavior when attempting tasks such as lining up, sharing, advocating for themselves, and in their ability to maintain attention toward achieving a goal. We are thrilled with our preschoolers’ progress this year so far, and are privileged to have the opportunity to witness their growth every day.

Lower School Updates

First graders shined in their annual Fairy Tale performances. Over the last several weeks, students have studied different fairy tales, and then engaged in the process of creating scripts, memorizing lines, and staging their tales. With adorable costumes (some of which were made by hand by our own Ms. Hetland!) and colorful backdrops, the students brought these iconic stories to life. We’re grateful to families, administrators and faculty for their commitment to supporting our students toward a successful production.

As part of their annual Symbols Unit, second graders began building their Bald Eagle this week. They are learning about measurement in math and the Bald Eagle in social studies in preparation for their Symbols Fair. They have learned how to measure inches, feet, and yards. They have been divided into four groups and are building a Bald Eagle to scale. The wingspan measures 6-8 feet, the body is 4 feet, and the nest is 5 feet by 2 feet. Accomplishing tangible tasks in correlation to their learning about history grounds the students’ knowledge and provides an active learning experience.

Students are gearing up to celebrate Nevada Reading Week during the week of February 27th through March 3rd. Our Student Council members joined together to create banners and welcome signs for one of our visiting authors, Daria Peoples. Third, fourth, and fifth graders worked toward preparing different art materials that Ms. Peoples will utilize during her presentation. All students engaged in an activity focusing on Ms. People's Show the World, in which they embodied several of Ms. People's illustrations that are featured in the book.

We wish everyone in our community an early Shabbat Shalom and a safe long weekend.

Upcoming Events

  • 2/20/23 - Presidents Day (no school for students)
  • 2/27-3/3/23 - Nevada Reading Week

Preschool Updates

Through hard work in our outdoor garden, our Cubs have been learning about Tu B'Shvat. They practiced their cutting skills when they gave the grass heads a haircut. They learned many Tu B'Shvat songs, and they loved tasting samples of foods grown on trees as well as foods from the seven species at their Tu B'Shvat seder. We hope that families enjoy the bean plants and cups of grass that were planted and sent home, in the spirit of the holiday.

Lower School Updates

Kindergarten and first grade students are learning about how to regulate emotions. The students interacted with tactile objects with varied textures and recorded how each made them feel. The goal for students is to become self-aware and autonomous in terms of managing difficult emotions that may surface throughout their days, ensuring that each is able to persevere through the gray moments and move swiftly back into the light. We are forever grateful to Ms. Maria and Ms. Kendra for their care and finesse with our developing Cubs and young Lions.

Mount Potosi is a Success

We were thrilled to accompany all fifth graders to Mount Potosi this week, bringing back a tradition that had since been on hold through the pandemic. Students hiked, participated in archery games, painted, and engaged in a Tu B’shvat activity and self-reflection with the mountains and snow as their backdrop. They enjoyed lunch and dynamic minute-to-win-it games! Spending time off campus in nature invites students to strengthen bonds and friendships, to challenge themselves physically and creatively, and to acknowledge how much learning can take place outside of the four walls of our school buildings. We thank all faculty and administration for planning and attending the trip with enthusiasm.

2023 Boys Basketball Champions!

We are overjoyed for the young athletes on our Lower School (5th grade) Boys’ Basketball team, coached by our Marketing & Communications Director, Mr. Boland, for their performance at the championship game this week. The team played their hearts out on the court and, in a nail-biter, came through with a 14-12 win over Faith Academy. Teamwork, focus, and determination guided the team to victory. We are so grateful for all who came out to support our team. Go, Lions!

Tu B’shvat Projects

This week Lower School students celebrated Tu B'Shvat, the 15th day of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, which is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. At this time in Israel, fruit bearing trees wake from their sleep and begin to bloom. Our innovative Hebrew and Judaics faculty presented all grade levels with experiential activities and opportunities to learn the tradition of the holiday, improve language skills, create artwork, and engage in a research project about the environment.

Second graders learned about the shapes and forms of different species of trees by creating 3D models and writing descriptive paragraphs about their trees in Hebrew.

Third grade students learned about cycles. They created projects describing the cycles and added Hebrew descriptions explaining the process within each cycle.

Fourth graders learned about the physiological and biological makeup of trees. They then created imaginary trees and included what the tree would need in order to survive, e.g., a Sport Tree needs energy drinks, baseballs, and jerseys (of course!).

Fifth grade students researched environmental issues that occur in both Israel and Nevada and compared the solutions that each state utilizes. The students presented and discussed these solutions as well as expressed their opinions on the issues.

All of our kindergarten through fifth grade students enjoyed creating artwork inspired by the trees that they studied and spending time in the garden, planting seeds. Looking ahead to spring, students planted parsley and cilantro which will grow until Passover, so the students can harvest and use these herbs for their seders.

Tu B'Shvat or not Tu B'Shvat

Our campus is blooming with educational projects that feature Tu B'Shvat. Students are engaging in symbolic songs, Hebrew vocabulary lessons which incorporate elements from the holiday, and art projects. Third graders studied cycles in nature in honor of Tu B'Shvat and created gorgeous artwork which they used to wallpaper the classrooms.

Reading Buddies: Behind the Scenes

In last week’s newsletter, we were thrilled to share the success of our bringing together different Lower School grade levels around sharing great books for a Reading Buddies event. This week, we wanted to venture behind the scenes to share with you the process in which our Lower School Student Council curated the popular event, to be repeated regularly over the rest of the school year. StuCo members first brainstormed potential event ideas that they could work on this year. They agreed on the  idea of creating a “Buddy System” in which older students pair with younger students. Committees were formed; some members worked on writing up a proposal to share with the Leadership Team, others worked on planning out details and activities for the first event, and others worked on pairing up the classes and individual students. Interviews between potential buddies were planned prior to the event in order to gauge effective matches. With support from our wonderful StuCo advisor Ms. Watkins and our administration, Reading Buddies was a smashing success. StuCo will schedule monthly Buddy Days in order to continue to encourage bonds and friendships among grade levels.

Battle of the Books

Select students in fourth and fifth grades are gearing up for Battle of the Books. Over the course of the school year, Adelson students – along with their counterparts in schools across Las Vegas – have read and studied the same eight books. In late March, representative teams from each school will join together at the Meadows School in order to engage in Jeopardy-style battles that focus on the books. One school will win the Battle of the Books! Last year, we were thrilled to take home second place trophies. We are excited for our ambitious Adelson Lions as they prepare for this year’s competition.

Wolfgang and Wonder

This week in Lower School music, students studied Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Stevie Wonder. Mr. Sam discussed their shared artistic origins as child musical prodigies and how they successfully transitioned from child stardom to mature, self-sufficient artists. Students also explored the differences between the characteristics of baroque and classical music and how the music of Beethoven broke away from classical forms, gave birth to the Romantic Era, and introduced the western world to a self-expressive and individualistic musical and artistic style that thrives to this day.

Chemical Gardens

Every year our fifth graders create “Chemical Gardens” in honor of Ilan Ramon who was the first Israeli to travel to space. Unfortunately, on February 1, 2003 the space shuttle Columbia broke up 16 minutes before landing. This week, students created Chemical Gardens on the 20th anniversary of his passing. The Chemical Garden experiment was one that Ilan Ramon performed in space. Students were passionate about “seeding” their gardens with metal salts and watching them “spout.”

A Symbolic Trip

Second graders visited the Nevada State Museum this week. They learned about state symbols and state history, and they observed the Nevada state seal, state flag, and state fossil. This important trip provided an active extension of the annual second grade US Symbols unit that students are currently studying in school. This classroom-to-real-world connection is part of the Adelson Advantage, and we are so pleased to have the opportunity to offer these kinds of educational experiences to our study body.

Preschool Updates

Cubs faculty presented an excellent workshop for families this week around the beginning stages of teaching our young ones to read. Texts featured included picture books with more illustrations than text which are effective tools to jump-start the process of matching images with sight words. Image-heavy stories also begin to solidify for young learners the awareness of basic literary elements including setting, character, and plot. We are grateful to our talented and creative preschool faculty and administration for reaching out to families to encourage this bond and partnership.

Lower School Updates

Hebrew students continue to strengthen their knowledge of the language through art. This week, in preparation for Tu B’shvat, second graders learned about the basic elements of a tree, from roots to blossoms. Introducing new vocabulary through the process of building art strengthens comprehension and emboldens students to use the vocabulary actively as they create.

We gathered as a Lower School community in the theater to celebrate Shabbat this week. It was a thrill to witness all kindergarten through fifth grade students and faculty swaying, singing, and clapping along. Fifth grade representatives announced the success of our (undefeated!) boys basketball team. They also reminded students that this Monday is the 100th day of school. In addition, we were entertained by a warm video shared by our Shins, who are visiting family in Israel, as well as a performance from the Kindergarten classes.

In celebration of reading, Lower School students joined across grade levels for a Reading Buddies event this week in order to bring together students from all classrooms and books of all genres. Students shared books from the Pete the Cat series, Dr. Seuss classics, high-interest Pokémon chapterbooks and tons more. Our third, fourth, and fifth graders displayed positive leadership skills, and our younger Lions became collaborative partners. It was exciting to join as a Lower School community in celebration of literacy. We thank classroom teachers and administrators for curating the event, and it is an excellent precursor to upcoming Nevada Reading Week (February 27-March 3)!

Preschool Updates

Our Cubs enjoyed creating homemade snow this week. By combining water and snow powder, faculty and students worked together to create a magical wonderland, all in the comfort of their cozy classrooms. Our youngest students reacted to the way the snow felt in their hands and fingers. In creating arctic animals as part of their snow-making project, they were able to build upon their awareness and knowledge of specific snowy locations on the globe. Finally, as is always the case, they came to the point in which they had to watch their show melt.

Lower School Updates

Our dedicated, green-thumbed Lions continue their work in our gorgeous outdoor garden space, despite the colder weather. This week, the club made progress harvesting carrots and radishes, and they cleaned up the space by removing leaves and weeds. Kudos to the dedication of the club in terms of maintaining our garden all year round.

In our efforts to create smooth transition points for all Adelson students, we were thrilled to present to Junior Kindergarten parents an informative evening called From Cubs to Lions, during which administrators from the Preschool and Lower School joined together to present essential information to families preparing their preschool children for matriculation to Kindergarten. We are committed to uniting with families through all steps of growth, and believe that these events contribute greatly to the Adelson Advantage which aims to guide our students thoughtfully through each division and benchmark, from 18 months to high school graduation and beyond. We were grateful to parents who made it out on a chilly evening, and were glad to make the event available via video for all.

Preschool Updates

Our Cubs enjoyed the process of creating snowflakes this week in the spirit of the winter season and the colder weather that we have been experiencing in the valley. As part of the steps taken toward producing their snowflakes, students explored the concepts of planning ahead, taking measurements, and exercising fine motor skills. Our preschoolers continue to grow and develop into independent thinkers, creators, and contributing members of their classroom communities.

Lower School Updates

First grade learners “met” the individual responsible for reviving the Hebrew language, Eliezer Ben Yehuda, as part of National Hebrew Language Day (Eliezer’s birthday). We are grateful to our Hebrew and Judaics faculty for enriching our students with meaningful lessons that explore the history of the Hebrew language, instilling in the Adelson Lions a foundational respect and appreciation for Jewish heritage and culture.

First grade and Kindergarten students are learning about the brain. Through symbolic use of animals, they discussed the prefrontal cortex (wise old owl), hippocampus (elephant), and amygdala (guard dog). They learned that our owl makes good decisions, our elephant is in charge of memory, and our guard dog always wants to keep us safe.

All Lower School students were united in our theater this week for a lively Shabbat service. Third graders led the service with poise and confidence, and our Lower School Student Council presented a meaningful tribute to

Martin Luther King Jr.

We celebrated the first annual Sheldon G. Adelson Day on January 11, 2023. Students across divisions participated in storytelling events, enjoyed some of Mr. Adelson’s favorite foods (bagels, Hersey’s kisses, and brownies), and Upper School students participated in a beautiful tribute in our theater presented by Dr. Miriam Adelson. We are grateful each day for the privilege of learning and growing on an extraordinary campus, populated by dedicated faculty, administration, and students. We owe this privilege to the Adelson family.

Preschool Updates

Our youngest Cubs have spent the first week of 2023 reconnecting with classroom teachers, specialists, and classmates. They continue to become more accustomed to routines and schedules, and are progressing in all areas of development. We are currently focusing on the season of winter with artwork, picture books, and activities that allow the children to compare and contrast each of the seasons. We are eager to witness the remarkable growth of our preschool students during the second semester of school.

Lower School Updates

The Garden Club welcomed 2023 by rolling up their sleeves and getting back into the dirt. After checking the quality of the soil surrounding crops planted last semester, they pulled weeds and took some soil samples. Back in the lab, they studied their samples under the microscope to investigate the health of the plants. We are endlessly grateful to Ms. Page and the Lower School Science Department for their continued commitment to providing this beautiful outdoor space, and educational opportunities for our budding botanists.

Our young scientists also enjoyed learning with Ms. Garner about water density and how it can change with various temperatures. Third Grade students investigated what happens when hot and cold water-filled vials are lowered into room temperature water. They were excited to see the red-colored hot water float and the blue-colored cold water sink.

In K-5 Music, students discussed Johann Sebastian Bach and The Beatles. They explored the history behind Paul McCartney’s inspiration for the song Blackbird which he wrote based on Bach’s Bourée in E Minor. They explored the profound effect that Bach’s compositions continue to have on the musicians of today, and how The Beatles became arguably the greatest band of the 20th Century. Our students are enriched every day that they work with the innovative and tireless Mr. Sam. We are thrilled that he is a part of our Arts Faculty.

Lower School students across grade levels were eager to begin second semester enrichments this week, including Girl Scouts and Great Adventures Robotics. In Robotics, students began with a "Getting to Know You" activity, and they were thrilled to work with peers and Ms. Pence in our incubator space. We are looking forward to the many creative projects and activities in which students will engage over the second semester.

Finally, we gathered together this week to celebrate Shabbat, along with the talented Upper School members of our school band as well as Mr. Philippus and Mr. Sam. Fifth Grade representatives announced that winter sports have commenced, and they shared a warm letter sent to us from the Veterans organization to which our school donated on Veterans Day. Students were able to hear how the funds that they raised were very appreciated and assisted in helping veterans in the Las Vegas Valley. Fifth Grade representatives encouraged students to contribute to tzedakah each week in order to continue to support the needs of those who struggle in the valley. We also sang and danced under the leadership of our exuberant Shinshinim and all Fifth Grade classes.

We were thrilled to welcome students back to campus this week, and we wish you a bright 2023 full of joy and success. Shabbat Shalom.

Preschool Updates

preschoolThis week, preschoolers were introduced to the Provocation Table. Faculty used candle sticks and other wax items to encourage students to experience these items using the five senses and through open-ended activities, without being overtly guided. This concept allows students to think independently and experience the autonomy of following their natural curiosities and instincts, in a safe and monitored lesson.

Cub parents joined students for a Hanukkah Shabbat program of songs and blessings in the Beit Midrash. All then returned to classrooms for a craft, latke, and donut party. We were thrilled to bring families onto campus to share in the celebration.

2nd gradeLower School Updates

Second grade students enjoyed their very first Author Celebration! Over the last several weeks, they have worked on Small Moment stories in a Narrative Unit. They learned how to echo and use repetition to bring their stories to conclusion, how to use comparisons, to add details, and how to hook their readers with strong beginnings. We shared our stories amongst classes and "published" our final pieces.

Fourth grade historians brought a little bit of history to life this week at The Adelson School’s Wax Museum of 2022. Over the course of this annual research project, each student studied various biographies on a chosen inspirational figure from history (recent or distant).

4th gradeThrough their careful research, students learned how and why their chosen figure changed our world for the better. Researchers used their carefully crafted notes to create a timeline of the character’s life and an informative poster board which acted as a backdrop at the event. Presenters developed their public speaking skills when delivering a speech in the first-person narrative, and in full costume, to an audience of family, faculty administration, and fellow students. Our biographers are currently analyzing their research to write a poem about their historical figure. These wonderful presentations debuted this week on campus at an event similar to that of Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. VIEW PHOTOS

Preschool Updates

This week the children worked on Hanukkah decorations. They began by cutting dreidel shapes from colorful paper. Children were then tasked with decorating their dreidels using stickers and other materials. Our Cubs enjoyed independence as they attempted engaging in the work of decorating all on their own. Students were proud of the dreidels that they created.

Lower School Updates

In science this week, fifth grade students headed outdoors to experiment with creating extracts (solutions with outdoor materials) as part of their chemistry lesson. Fourth graders investigated various soil samples from diverse areas on earth, and third graders observed water droplets falling on different surfaces, and specifically noted how and why the droplets slid down slopes as opposed to flat surfaces.

Science

Our Garden Club continues to bloom. This week, students harvested radishes. Our club is a reminder of how, even in our arid climate, we can work together to provide the correct circumstances for seeds to germinate and grow into fresh vegetables. The process has been enriching and rewarding for the children and a reminder that all good things take time to grow.

We were thrilled to celebrate reading at our annual Scholastic Book Fair this week! Parent volunteers created a magical pop-up book shop in the Beit Midrash for the enjoyment of our entire student population. Students, faculty, and parents spent collective hours marking purchases, visiting with one another, and getting lost in thought while browsing the shop. According to longtime independent bookstore owner, Jeff Deutsch, in his ode to the tradition of bookselling, In Praise of Good Bookstores (Princeton University Press, 2022), “The good bookstore sells, but its primary product is the browsing experience.” The author goes on to illuminate that browsing aisles of books incites myriad emotions and reminds us – even before we make a purchase – of the value and sacredness of stories. We are so grateful for the time and effort that our parent volunteers contributed to make our fair a success.

Preschool Updates

Our Cubs have been learning about Thanksgiving. They have explored many types of food and have learned that each comes from a different source. For example, vegetables, like pumpkins and potatoes, come from farms and then make their way to a grocery store, and finally to people’s homes. The Cubs reflected on tradition and discussed how many gather with friends and family at this time of year, sharing delicious foods in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Cubs also explored the concept of giving thanks. They practiced their Hebrew "Todah" song as well as another song called "A Turkey is a Funny Bird!" On Thanksgiving day, the children are looking forward to using the special placemat that they created in class.

Preschool Shabbat

With colder weather upon us, Preschool students lined their coats on the rugs in their rooms prior to heading outside and learned the “flip trick.” They are very proud of themselves and their new sense of independence.

Lower School Updates

The third graders enthusiastically delivered homemade cranberry bread to faculty members all over the Lower School this week. Students had the opportunity to bake the festive loaves with Ms. Tecktiel in the cafeteria. They rolled up their sleeves and worked together in a lively lesson, learning about the order of adding the ingredients, the baking time, and the tradition of baking bread in our school. We were thrilled to bring this activity back to school after a several year hiatus. Our faculty and administration are grateful to Ms. Tecktiel and our third-grade bakers for this wonderful homemade treat.

Over the last few weeks in the library, Lower School students have participated in a read-aloud activity in which they first chose an excerpt from one of the books they’ve read so far this year, read it aloud to the class, and then stated three reasons why others might enjoy the book. Students have explored many authors and genres, including the “I Survived” series by Lauren Tarshis, Raina Telgemeier’s graphic novels, and classics like The Secret Garden by Burnett. Receiving recommendations from fellow students has proven effective as after the activity, many are eager to check out the books from which excerpts have been shared. We are creating curious and dedicated readers at The Adelson School.

Preschool Updates

Our Cubs engaged in a story about understating our “personal bubble” as individual space as well as the concept of being invited into someone else’s personal bubble. Students are beginning to understand that it is permissible to use words like “please stop” if someone intrudes on their bubble. They were introduced to the concept of respecting the boundaries when they would like to be independent in their personal space. Following the book, Ms. Maria and the children enjoyed watching big bubbles as if they were “personal bubbles.”

Lower School Updates

Our First Graders voted this week, exercising their civic duty in our school. They felt very proud. They learned about the process of voting and the importance of developing informed opinions. They listened to the book Duck for President, by Doreen Cronin. Following the story, they were able to cast their votes for president (according to the characters in the book). Farmer John won, in a landslide victory.

Our Fifth Graders wrapped up their Colonization Simulation this week. This simulation allowed students to experience the mystery of exploration and the hazards and perils of colonial life. Students were divided into small groups where a dice roll determined whether they were colonizing as a private company, on behalf of a government, or for religious freedom. After studying map skills and learning about the ship and important cargo, students prepared their ships and set sail. Many lost a ship at sea. Eventually, they landed in the New World and realized they weren't alone. Students divided their roles as colony leaders, bankers, mappers, traders, and recorders and pressed to make decisions concerning the division of labor, the role of government, and defense against a possible Native American attack. Interaction among the colonies resulted in trading, alliances, and sometimes conflict. Eventually, some colonial groups prospered while others drew difficult fate cards or struggled to cooperate, solve issues, or manage their supplies. Some colonies sadly did not survive to the end or were seized by a nearby colony. In the end, the wealthiest colony won. The simulation was a rich learning experience for all.

In music class this week, students were introduced to the concept of improvisation and were given an opportunity to improvise to the American folk song Old Joe Clarke using the congas and xylophones. They also learned a rhyme called Double Trouble that involved rhythmic hand movements that the students performed in pairs. Then, using a metronome, they performed the rhyme and hand movements at increasing tempos.

Our whole school population gathered outdoors at the flagpole on Friday morning to remember those who have served in the armed forces. Mr. Gordon gave thanks on behalf of all of us to those who have given their lives in the name of freedom. Our Fifth Grade students recited a poem and our Upper School musicians, under the direction of Mr. David Philippus, performed our Star Spangled Banner and Hatikivah beautifully. We were grateful to spend time together in order to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.

Preschool students are learning all about the creation story. The Cubs are participating in activities that correspond to G-d’s creations during the seven days, according to the Torah. During one lesson, children explored a sensory bin filled with a variety of materials, textures, and colors to help teach about the “Dark and the Light” and the “Sky and the Sea.” They also enjoyed working together with crafting materials to create the sky and the ocean.

Preschool

During Life Skills classes, our upper elementary students fused empathy and innovation and came up with STEMpathy. Small groups were given hypothetical scenarios in which an individual faced a problem or challenge.

legosStudents worked through the process of empathizing, hypothesizing, and innovating a way in which the person in the scenario could access their environment. Students then built a replica of their creation with legos. Small groups created such things as a robotic arm with a shoulder joint and hand clamp so a person with a missing limb would be able to jump rope. Another group created a hover attachment for a wheelchair so a wheelchair bound student could participate with her peers in a community marsh clean up. In creating projects with others, students reflected on strategies that may guide them through the problem-solving process as well as emboldened them to share their creative ideas with peers, listen to the ideas of others, and ideally, STEMpathize with one another.

Lower School musicians learned about the different families of musical instruments and then focused on the woodwind family. Mr. Sam brought in and played his soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, and clarinet; and spoke to the students about what makes woodwind instruments unique. They discussed the different types of woodwind reeds, the way that the sized wooden mouthpiece sets woodwinds apart from other instruments, and why the flute is a woodwind even though it doesn’t require a reed to produce sound.

LibrarySpecial guest librarians, Ms. Audrey and Ms. Jennifer, visited us from theSummerlin Library down the street to interact with our Lower School students during two lively assemblies in the Beit Midrash. They brought songs, activities, read aloud, and enjoyed an escape room experience. Students learned that this beautiful public library is located just down the street from our school as well as received information about the different events, programs and activities that are offered every day of the week.

Fourth Graders had the opportunity to explore Las Vegas

history during an interactive museum experience in their very own classroom. Guest speakers visited our school with historical objects and activities to deliver a hands-on presentation about the importance of the Hoover Dam. Our budding historians discovered why the dam was constructed and what life was like for the workers who built the structure, both on the job and in 1930s southern Nevada. A bit of history came to life right before students’ eyes, and they had the opportunity to interact with artifacts dating back nearly a century. We are grateful to our administration and Fourth Grade faculty for making the experience possible.

In Lower School music classes, students played several different games, including Up A Ladder, Down A Ladder, Chook Chook, and Moving To The Pulse, all of which are designed to get them thinking rhythmically and developing a sense of timing and tempo through body movement. In addition, they learned the Chicken Dance and played Musical Hot Potato. Many students played a dice-rolling game that involved using the Circle of 5ths to construct major scales. Students also rehearsed their upcoming performances of our state song, “Home Means Nevada.”

Lower School students and faculty gathered outside for Shabbat this week and were joined by our tremendous Upper School band, under the direction of Mr. David Philippus, and accompanied by our beloved Lower School music teacher, Mr. Sam. Morah Dina led the students in a celebration of Simchat Torah in which all grade levels paraded around the new playground, waving flags and percussion instruments, and enjoying traditional songs including, “Shalom Aleichem” and “Dovid Melech Yisrael.” The service culminated in beautiful Torah readings by guest Upper School students and Shabbat blessings from the fifth graders. Gathering together outside in the autumn weather was a blessing. We are so grateful to our performing arts students and faculty, our Judaics faculty, and all students and teachers for their preparation and participation in the celebration of Simchat Torah. Preschool Highlights

Our Cubs continue to explore their classroom spaces and our beautiful outdoor nooks and gardens in engaging lessons and activities. As we near the end of the first quarter of the school year, our preschool students are becoming more comfortable in their routines and their classroom schedules, and witnessing their growth has been invaluable.

preschoolIn Library visits this week, Junior Kindergarten students enjoyed the book World of Worm Shapes by Esther van den Berg. They then worked in small groups to create different shapes using popsicle sticks. Library visits allow students to spread out on beanbags to hear stories, to work in partnerships and small groups, and to explore the space independently by browsing high-interest books, making art, creating shapes with PlayDoh, and putting together puzzles.

Lower School Highlights

Second Graders are learning about Israeli art in a fun and creative way. Their activities include “retrieving” a different Israeli art piece that has been “stolen” from the Israeli art vault. In the process of finding the missing piece of art, they learn about different artistic styles and mediums, the artist, Israel, Judaism, and more.

third grade

This week, the Third Graders welcomed Dr. Jennifer Nez Denetdale as a virtual guest speaker to the Beit Midrash. Dr. Denetdale is a Professor and Chair of American Studies at the University of New Mexico. To enrich the Third Graders’ studies of Indigenous Americans, Dr. Denetdale spoke to students about The Long Walk, a forced march in the 1860s of the Diné/Navajo from their homelands to a reservation at Bosque Redondo. She shared photographs depicting her family’s connection to The Long Walk and encouraged students to go looking in their attics and storage boxes for historical treasures from their own families.

Third and Fourth Graders took part in an engaging lesson in celebration of Banned Books Week. In a large group discussion, students defined the word “ban.” They also chatted in small groups about different popular books that have been banned in the recent and distant past. Students shared thoughts about the idea of banning books and made the distinction between removing books entirely from libraries versus organizing books into grade-level appropriate sections.

battle Fourth and Fifth Graders have had their first Battle of the Books meeting of the year. We are thrilled to share that 25 students have elected to participate this year. They will join hundreds of students from schools across Las Vegas as they read the same eight books over the course of the school year, studying each book to commit to memory important details. In the spring, teams of four from all schools will compete against each other in Jeopardy-style battles, bringing together students from schools across the valley, all in celebration of literacy.

Preschool

Preschool students used their 5 senses as they prepared for the upcoming holiday, Rosh Hashanah. Many classes took a walk to our own pomegranate tree and had opportunities to explore the real pomegranates growing and compare them to photos of pomegranates.

Students had fun listening to the sound of the shofar as our Director of Jewish Life. Moshe Borvick, visited classrooms to teach about and blow the shofar. Children really engaged their sense of taste, touch, and smell at a Rosh Hashanah seder where they each had a chance to try some new foods and explore different textures. Each student worked hard on a special Rosh Hashanah gift for their families. It has been wonderful to see and hear the joyful singing, engaging stories, and active learning going on in each class as children get ready for the new year! Shana Tova U’metica!

Lower School

Our Lower School students have been preparing for the holidays in an engaging and interactive manner. Kindergarten students learned about the symbolic foods that we eat on Rosh Hashanah and named them in Hebrew. In addition, they learned the classic Israeli Rosh Hashanah song “Shana Halcha Shana Ba’ah.” In their art specials, they created decorative honey bee centerpieces.

First graders have learned about the meaning behind sounding the shofar at this time of year as well as the names of the different kinds of “blasts.” They also read stories that focused on repentance and learning. In art, they created and decorated their own mini shofars to take home to their families and learned about the importance of wishing relatives a Shana Tova. They read stories that focused on offering up apologies and reflected on what it means to begin anew.

lower school

Second graders led us in Shabbat this week, bringing energy and joy to our weekly celebration. We are grateful to our Shinshinim, Mr. Borvick, Mr. Sam, and all second grade faculty for their guidance and support. This week, second graders also discussed the symbolism of pomegranates and brainstormed ways to perform good deeds (mitzvot). They discussed the importance of recognizing when friends behave well, and how powerful and fulfilling it can be when we focus on others and support them when they shine. In art class, they each created a decorative pomegranate.

The third graders worked diligently to learn a song about the Jewish months and they discussed the three areas that we focus on in the days that lead to the High Holidays: Teshuvah, Tefillah and Tzedakkah.

In addition to learning about the seven steps of Teshuvah (repentance), our fourth graders learned about different greetings in Hebrew you wish for family and friends for the new year, and they created beautiful artwork by writing their wishes on wood with Ms. Levy.

Celebrating Rosh Hashanah in the fifth grade was a fun filled experience. Students had the opportunity to share the gorgeous canvas displaying the phases of the moon they created in art when learning about the relationship between the Jewish calendar and the lunar cycle. They read the traditional blessings for their classmates and shared why particular foods are included on the seder plate. They researched more traditions and symbolism of the food we eat on Rosh Hashanah and brainstormed new foods they want to include in their own Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

It was a pleasure to witness the learning and growth that took place this past week as we head into the celebration of the new year. We wish all families and friends a fulfilling long weekend full of family time, traditions, joy, and renewal. We are grateful for your partnership. L’Shana Tova and Shabbat Shalom.

Preschool Highlights

Our tiniest cubs continue to work toward establishing routines, becoming familiar with fellow classmates and faculty, and meeting educational goals. This week, many of our Preschool classes embarked on “field trips” across campus to visit Ms. Maria and Ms. Kendra in their offices near the Fifth Grade classrooms and Specials hallway. Students experienced the thrill of journeying through the different buildings, greeting new faculty faces along the way, and observing the older students as they moved through their school day. Once the cubs arrived, they engaged in creative play and interactions with books and educational games. Our cubs are becoming more and more acclimated to participating in these kinds of adventures while on campus, and our excellent Preschool faculty continue to facilitate active and dynamic lessons that challenge, stimulate, and engage.

We look forward to further learning and growth next week.

Lower School Highlights

Lower School students practiced Hebrew skills and learned about the history of Rosh Hashanah in a matching game this week. As we move ahead in the month of Elul and approach the holiday, students are beginning to reflect and prepare for the new year to come. Our Hebrew faculty works relentlessly to create meaningful programming all year, and holiday time is always packed with enriching projects and activities.

Green-thumbed students ventured bravely into the heat for the inception of Garden Club this week and made great progress. Our fearless club facilitator, Ms. Page led Junior Gardeners through the process of tilling the garden and learning how to use a moisture meter to track the moisture levels for our seeds. They are working hard to maintain their data so they will be ready to plant when the time comes.

fifth grade science

In science with the incredible Ms. Garner, Fifth-grade student teachers did an excellent job teaching their classmates about simple machines. They came prepared with a quiet signal, introduction video, assigned reading, hands-on science/engineering activity, Newton Challenge, and quiz. We all learned a lot about how simple machines make work easier.

In music, students listened to “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie as well as interacted with the book of the same name (illustrated by Hannah Marks and based on the song’s lyrics). Students then participated in a guided mindfulness exercise called “Mindful Hearing” created by Annaka Harris. Students also continued their collaborative songwriting project. We are thrilled to have the talented Mr. Sam guiding our students through this exploration of different musical styles, methods for creating melodies and lyrics, and active lessons and activities.

shinshinim

Our beloved Shinshinim, Carmel and Dvir have embarked on meaningful projects with each grade level in the Lower School that will enhance their understanding and knowledge of Israel. Kindergartners will become tourists who are preparing to visit Israel. They will research the cities in which they will spend time, prepare the appropriate items to bring along, and set out for adventures in the land of milk and honey. In First Grade, students will learn all about what it is like to grow up in Israel in terms of pop culture, fashion, activities, cuisine, and family life. Second Graders will journey into the world of Israeli art; Third Graders will explore the world famous Israeli National Trails; Fourth Graders will study Israeli inventions; and our Fifth Graders will learn all about the history of Israeli leadership. We could not be more thrilled to have Mr. Moshe and our Shins guiding our students through these excellent projects that will cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the state of Israel.

Preschool Highlights

This week, our Cubs continued discussing emotions and how they differ. They explored strategies to support transitioning smoothly through the varying feelings that we may experience throughout the school day. Our children enjoyed creating different faces and expressions using magnet boards with different features.

Preschool Library

Junior Kindergarten students explored shapes, colors, patterns, and the concepts of sorting and categorizing during their visits to the Adelson Library this week. They participated actively in games identifying shapes and patterns as well as successfully sorted themselves into small groups, based on different colored shapes that they drew out of a box. They also listened to the books Bear Sees Color by Karma Wilson and One Boy by Laura Vaccaro Seeger which punctuated these concepts.

Lower School Highlights

Lower School

This week, Third Graders participated in our annual Shofar Factory led by special guest Rabbi Metal from Chabad of Summerlin. Workshops included a slideshow presentation about the history of the shofar and which animals are used in the making of the instrument, an exploration of the techniques used in order to make a shofar, and an overview of the traditions surrounding the shofar and the time of year during which it is played. Students worked hard all week, heading outside during one of the workshops in order to measure their materials, and then drilling and sanding the materials into shofars. We are grateful to Rabbi Metal for his time and expertise.

During Shabbat, families were welcomed into the theater to celebrate the service with us for the first time in two years. Facilitated by our own Morah Dina, and with accompaniment from the talented Mr. Moshe on drums and the versatile Mr. Sam (who scored the tzedakah dance on soprano sax!), this week’s celebration centered around our Third Graders. With shofars in hand, the students took the stage, sang beautifully, and blew their shofars, sharing their week-long project with the Lower School community, and reminding all of us that the month of Elul is upon us, and Rosh Hashanah is near. In addition to celebrating with the Third Graders, our Shinshinim, the wonderful Carmel and Dvir, took us on a humorous journey through Israel, as they searched for their misplaced shofars. We were thrilled to enjoy Shabbat together this week among our larger community of supportive families. We wish you a rejuvenating long weekend, safe travels if you are heading out of town, and a Shabbat Shalom.

Preschool Highlights

Adelson Preschool students are engaged in a unit of study called “All About Me.” Using mirrors, the children are guided to examine many different aspects of themselves. Identifying facial features, recognizing the varying ways that they can use their hands in safe ways – such as helping and sharing – and moving their bodies creatively are some of the ways in which our Cubs have begun to explore their identities. As they share information about themselves, they learn all about their new classmates as well. Enhancing this theme are books, art projects, and games.

Preschool science

In science, the innovative Ms. Page guided the Junior Kindergarten students to investigate seashells. They learned about two kinds of shells: bivalves and gastropods. Bivalves have two parts and gastropods only have one. Students sorted their shells and learned how to use a magnifying lens to see their shells' tiny attributes. Students also learned how to use a pipette to put water on their shells and see if they would change color. They noticed that the bivalves were like tiny bowls and discovered that they could use their pipette to fill the bowls with water.

In music, Preschoolers listened to "Octopus’s Garden" and enjoyed the illustrated book by Ringo Starr and illustrated by Ben Cort. The wonderful Mr. Sam sang and played both "You Are My Sunshine" and "Mr. Sun" on guitar, and the classes discussed the earth’s dependence on the sun. Students then played rhythm sticks along with the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Our young musicians became sleeping lions during the lyrical sections, only to roar themselves awake during the falsetto, non-lyrical bridge. Finally, they danced and moved along with the songs "Planet Dance" and "Run Baby Run" and ended class with the song "Skinnamarink."

We can’t wait for more excitement next week!

Lower School Highlights

feelingsMs. Kendra, one of our incredible Lower School counselors, has been sharing the book Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis with Kindergartners and First Graders. Students matched faces with feelings and then practiced making those faces. They discussed that it is okay to feel sad or mad sometimes, and they identified the reasons why it is important to control their actions. Second and Third graders filled out get-to-know-you questionnaires and shared aloud some of their responses, thus establishing a safe space for exploration and learning.

Mr. Sam continued enlightening our students through music this week. He demonstrated the different parts of his electric guitar and pedal board. Students were intrigued by the way that the pickups send a signal to the amplifier, and how several different kinds of effects work (reverb, delay, distortion, overdrive). Students began learning the basics of musical notation and discussed the whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes and rests. The Fifth Graders sang karaoke for each other; a few brave students even performed solo! Mr. Sam aims to get all students playing instruments and reading basic rhythms in the coming weeks.

HebrewOur amazing Hebrew team explored with students the way that the brain works when learning a second language using a “model brain.” They watched it grow as they spoke, listened and learned fundamentals within the Hebrew language these last several weeks. Students now anticipate watching and experiencing this growth at every class. Additionally, our young Hebrew learners are beginning to develop beginning reading skills, using the Reshand Heh letters.

Fifth grade project

In Shabbat, our Fifth Grade Hebrew learners shared with our entire Lower School community the beautiful Tzedakah boxes that they had made with the guidance of our Hebrew faculty. Each week, classes will bring their decorated boxes to each Shabbat celebration.

We are invigorated after our third week together, were so pleased to spend time with so many of you during Back to School nights this past week, and look forward to continuing on the journey with your children next week.

Shabbat Shalom.

Preschool Highlights

The Adelson preschoolers continued to explore their new surroundings during this second week of school. It takes time to transition to a new classroom, new teachers, and new classmates. Children are developing trusting and loving relationships as they play, sing, and learn. In just two weeks of school we are seeing so much growth and joy throughout the building and the outdoor spaces!

Preschool feelingsMs. Maria, one of our wonderful LS counselors, was busy in preschool classrooms reading stories about how to calm down and manage big feelings. She shared valuable books including Calm at the Restaurant, a Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Collection and Little Monkey Calms Down, by Michael Dahl. With the help of Daniel Tiger, Ms. Maria guided children through the process of taking deep breaths using a pinwheel as a visual tool.

Ms. Lisa, our talented Movement Specialist, worked with all preschoolers on listening skills, following directions and spatial awareness through interactive games in the gym including “Red Light, Green Light,” “What Time is it, Mr. Fox?” and “Driving in My Car.”

Junior Kindergarten libraryOur eldest Cubs, the Junior Kindergarten, enjoyed their first visits to the Library this week. Students explored the different shapes and colors found in the Library space and shared the books Color Zoo by Lois Elert and Random House’s My Book About Shapes with our librarian, Ms. Nails. Students then participated in an activity in which they sorted themselves into groups based on different cut-outs of colorful shapes that they’d been given. They were then tasked with brainstorming different objects that represented those shapes. Students also enjoyed making art, relaxing with a book of their choosing, making puzzles, and play-dough time.

We can’t wait for more excitement next week!

Lower School Highlights

It’s been a fantastic first couple of weeks with the Lower School students in music class. This week we focused on learning about the fundamental science of sound. We discussed sound as a vibrational force of nature, how sound waves interact with different kinds of spaces and surfaces, and how sound waves are absorbed and reflected by their environment. We then discussed the way the human ears and brain perceive sound. We learned about the three main parts of the ear (Outer, Middle, and Inner) and their different facets and functions. We then defined music as a combination of the natural phenomenon of sound, the human ear, and human ingenuity. In other words, music is art made of sound.

Lower School students enjoyed a lively Shabbat in the theater led by Mr. Moshe, Mr. Sam, Morah Dina, and our Shinshinim, Carmel and Dvir. The service began with an announcement from Fifth Grade Tzedakah representatives Chloe Ghadishah, Juliana Levisman, and Noah Gordon. The students articulately expressed the purpose of giving and the ways in which tzedakah makes our community stronger. Later in the celebration, Carmel and Dvir shared a slideshow highlighting the history and beautiful landscape of Israel. We are so grateful to unite together, in the same space, as a Lower School community each Friday morning.

We wish you a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to greeting you at Back to School Night next week.

Shabbat Shalom.

THIS WEEK OF LOWER SCHOOL

First week of school

Welcome back to the Adelson School. This week, we were thrilled to greet a student body larger than any in the history of our school. Students thrived this first week, becoming familiar with teachers and classrooms, navigating to new areas in the school, and reacquainting with old friends while making new ones.

Highlights from the Toddlers through Junior Kindergarten

Donning new backpacks and uniforms, our Cubs made their way to their new classrooms with big smiles on their faces. Children were affectionately greeted by their new teachers and encouraged to explore their new surroundings and meet new friends.

Students enjoyed investigating the playground and outdoor classrooms, especially our beautiful, new grassy areas outside. Students particularly loved the water play, given our humid weather over the course of the week. Once back inside, children and teachers played name games, sang both new and familiar songs, and read stories about beginning school. Mr. Sam, our talented Lower School Music Educator, guided students through an imaginary jungle adventure using song and movement.

On Friday, we celebrated our first Shabbat together as a classroom kehillah (community). We eagerly await more fun and exciting exploration next week.

Highlights from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade

Students began the week with exuberance, poised to take on the school year. They shared what they’d been up to over the summer, met new friends, opened lockers for the first time, became familiar with new cubbies and new classrooms, and began to settle into another excellent year of learning.

Science students explored Isaac Newton's Laws of Motion by experimenting with fun "tricks" using gravity, force, and inertia. Marie Curies and Albert Einsteins of tomorrow had a blast.

Hebrew students brushed up their vocabulary knowledge and created hats to show off their skills. Fourth Grade students participated in a fancy “book tasting” event in which they sampled fine titles from various genres and elected to check out their favorites. They found that their palates had matured since last school year.

All students celebrated Shabbat in the theater on Friday and were greeted warmly by Head of School, Mr. Peter Gordon. Mr. Gordon reminded students of our foundational messages of respect and kindness, and encouraged them to let those principals guide them throughout this school year. We were thrilled to meet our extraordinary new Director of Jewish Life, Mr. Moshe Borvick, and were proud to introduce our enthusiastic 2022-2023 Shinshinim, Carmel and Dvir.

We could not be more pleased to begin the school year with our tremendous faculty and administration, our eager and exceptional students, and our supportive families. We wish you all a year of growth and success. Shabbat Shalom.
