Giving to the Annual Fund

Is it Charity or Responsibility?

Hebrew has no word equivalent to charity. Charity comes from the Latin word meaning “love.”  In Hebrew we speak of tzedakah, which comes from the word meaning “justice” or “righteousness.”  In Jewish tradition, giving is not just an act of love or kindness but rather a responsibility.

givingGiving to a Jewish day school is not an act of charity. It is the recognition of our joint responsibility to ensure the future of Jewish life. Giving to the Adelson School means recognizing and appreciating what Adelson means to your children and your community.

Private schools cannot exist on the revenue from tuition alone.  Like virtually every other private educational institution, we are dependent on the generosity of our parents, grandparents, and other members of the community.

If you have children or grandchildren at the Adelson, we invite you to join others in fulfilling the precept of tzedakah by assuming responsibility for the school that educates those you love.  If you are a member of the Las Vegas Jewish community, we invite you to join us in supporting one of the most vibrant and critical institutions of Jewish life in our city.

What is so critical about Adelson?

The Talmud provided the explanation more than 1500 years ago:

אין העולם מתקים אלא בשביל הבל תינוקות של בית רבן

“The world only exists because of the innocent breath of schoolchildren.”

 (Talmud Shabbat 119b)

What exactly does that mean?

It means that the continued existence of our world and its culture depends on the education of our children. For Las Vegas it means that the school children at Adelson are the future leaders of our city. And for the Jewish community, it means that the existence of our people and our heritage requires that we educate the younger generation.

Your contribution to Adelson enables the school’s mission to provide an Education for Life. One that inspires a lifelong love of learning, academic self-confidence, unequivocal Jewish values, a strong connection to Israel, a sense of responsibility towards the needs of society, and career choices that lead to successful lives and leadership opportunities to influence a better world.

Your support ensures outstanding faculty, exceptional secular and Judaic academics, innovative technology, entrepreneurial and professional studies, extracurricular programs and clubs, a dynamic arts and athletic curriculum, training for interscholastic competitions, a safe and secure campus.

Please support us at whatever level you can.  And please do it because you recognize that the future of our school is a shared responsibility.
